diatom update: i figured out how to adjust the contrast on my microscope and no it's not a diatom, it's some kind of extremely tiny leaf, here's another picture of a similar leaf:

• attach the LED flashlight, right now i'm just holding it under the microscope
• some kind of mount to hold my phone (or a dedicated camera) in the right spot for microphotography, right now i'm just holding it over the eyepiece
